Treatment Plans for Poor Prognosis Patients
Over the past several years the staff of La Jolla IVF has noticed an increase in patients seeking treatment at our facility who are older and who have been turned away from other IVF centers as poor prognosis patients. It is the clinic's philosophy not to turn patients away regardless of how we think they may affect our success rates.
This particular sub population of patients are carefully counseled as to their pregnancy potential and alternatives such as egg donation, gestational surrogacy and adoption are thoroughly explored. If however, a patient still wishes to
undertake an IVF cycle, they are not denied access to treatment. Many of these patients proceed with embryo accumulation cycles whereby the patient undergoes a
stimulation cycle or a natural cycle and the resulting embryo(s) are frozen. After
several such cycles enough embryos will have been accumulated so that the patient can then do a Frozen Embryo Transfer cycle. This treatment approach enables us to
offer realistic pregnancy potential for patients with resistant ovaries due to age and/or incipient ovarian failure and for those patients who cannot take fertility medications due to illness or cancer.
